Journalism is truth

Without journalists putting their own lives at risk everyday, citizens would be blind to the obscenities that go on behind people of powers’ closed doors.

So much goes on that we the people do not know. Things that we would never know if some did not have the courage to investigate and expose people in powerful positions for the crimes against humanity that they commit.

Journalism is not just about reporting on sports games and the latest fashion trends. It is easy to forget the real role the media can play when half the time all you see are articles about what Kim Kardashian wore to the mall.

Sure, journalism can be helpful in small ways too. You can find out about local events and clubs you may be interested in. And, maybe you do care about Kim Kardashian’s outfit choices.

The media is where people get all of their news. Be it newspapers, news channels, internet articles, or any social media platform. Journalism is important because how else would you get your news?

Some forms of media can be biased and you may not like them, but there is something out there for everyone to be able to get the news how they want it. It also keeps you up to date with events happening all around the world.

Most people do not know what goes on in the secret world of politicians and wealthy social elites. Most people do not care enough or even want to look.

Journalists are the only ones who take the risk to peek behind the scenes and find out what is really going on, and they risk their lives doing so.

In the film Spotlight, journalists uncover the truth about the rampant pedophilia going on in churches. This had been going on for years and many knew about it.

The church knew and they just simply rotated the priests who committed these crimes to different locations instead of doing anything about it. Action was only taken when journalists investigated the issue and exposed it to the public.

If they had not stepped in, nobody would have. Journalism makes it impossible to turn a blind eye, and holds people accountable for their actions.

Journalism can also be incredibly dangerous. Journalists will uncover the truth for the people to know, but at what costs?

In the documentary, The Panama Papers, journalists uncovered and exposed a huge money laundering chain that involved many politicians and wealthy people. In doing this they put themselves in danger.

Many journalists had to go into hiding after the papers were released. In letting people know the truth, they put their lives on the line.

However if they hadn’t, how long would the tax evasion and money laundering have gone on? Who would have told the public the truth. To this day we may have not known if no one had stepped up to the task.

Without journalism there is nothing to keep people in power in check. There is nothing to expose the evils truths of what is really going on.
